For Rene Descartes, the Father of Modern Philosophy, the greatest passion of his life was women with crossed eyes. As he explained in a letter to Queen Christina of Sweden, the cause of the obsession lies in his childhood when he fell in love with a slightly cross-eyed girl.
The moment he looked at her wandering eyes, he was moved by the passion of love. For a long time afterward, in seeing cross-eyed women, he felt more inclined to love them than others, simply because they had that imperfection.
